Marisol Ortiz on Why Change Management Is Really Change Leadership

Change management expert and psychologist Marisol Ortiz tells Greg Aden why organizational change is always about emotions, and why it may really be change leadership.
Marisol explains that the best predictor of how you will handle the next change is how you handled the last one, and she walks through how to look honestly at your own history, name the style you used, and then build a plan from there. She pushes leaders to name the fear sitting underneath resistance, whether that is job security, age, or being replaced by newer talent, and she makes the case that a leader has to work through the change personally before a team can follow, even when that leader disagrees with the direction.
They also talk about change fatigue and change saturation after COVID, the speed of digital adoption and what it revealed about the human component of work, the pull between comfort at home and real in person connection, and why hope and trust in the people steering the organization matter. Greg closes with the question behind the episode: if managers manage processes and leaders lead people, shouldn't we call this change leadership?
