Sarah Oehler on Telling Your Own Story as a Leader

Sarah Oehler, Assistant Director of Communications at Colorado State University and former news anchor, talks with Greg Aden about storytelling, parenting and leadership.

Sarah spent years telling other people's stories, first as an on-air broadcast journalist and later in public relations, before moving into higher education communications. She describes the night her daughter asked to hear a story about when mom was a kid, and why answering honestly made her more relatable as a parent and as a leader. She also shares the choice to step away from an anchor contract rather than miss bedtimes, and what she is learning about slowing down, listening instead of explaining, and getting curious about the people on her team after years of working at newsroom speed.

Sarah names the mentors who believed in her before she believed in herself, including Rebecca Robinson, Terry Anzur, who went from college professor to talent coach, and Laura Love of Ground Floor Media. Greg adds why empathy and authentic curiosity build trust faster than authority ever will, and why leadership is a verb while boss is only a noun.
