Leadership Burnout: Why Well-Being Builds Your Capacity | Jamie Shapiro, PhD

Greg Aden talks with Jamie Shapiro, PhD, CEO and founder of Connected EC, about why a leader's well-being is not separate from their leadership.
Jamie shares her path from corporate technology leadership to executive coaching, nutrition school, and a PhD studying energy. She walks through the nine dimensions of well-being in the PERMA plus 4 model, which includes positive emotion, engagement, relationships, environment, mindset, accomplishment, and financial security, and explains why most people shrink well-being down to physical health alone. She also names the gap she sees in the research: companies invest in well-being programs, yet the workforce is not getting healthier, because well-being is still treated as separate from leadership and culture.
Greg and Jamie get specific about white space on the calendar as part of the job rather than a luxury, and why blocking it four or five weeks out beats waiting for a free week that never comes. They talk about parenting as a leadership laboratory, the question "who are you being right now?", and close on courage, believing in yourself at 28 or at 48, and the harder work of letting go of relationships that no longer serve you.
