So let&#8217;s start by defining what love means in this context.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re not talking about romantic love here. We mean what the Harvard Business Review called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/01\/employees-who-feel-love-perform-better\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compassionate love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d This is what people mean when they say they can \u201cfeel the love\u201d \u2013 that sense of acceptance, belonging, and togetherness that successful leaders foster in the workplace.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What role does communication play in building an authentically\u2013and appropriately\u2013loving atmosphere in the workplace? In compassionate workplaces, employees feel safe to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verbally express appropriate affection for each other<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show compassion and understanding<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look out for each other&#8217;s feelings and interests<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak kindly and tenderly and really listen when things don\u2019t go well<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all starts with leaders who model loving communication. Some tips include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Express pride in team members and their achievements<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the emotions you\u2019re projecting to your team each day in your verbal and written communication<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review company policies to ensure they support a culture of kind communication<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s often the small gestures that mean the most. Regular, sincere, one-on-one conversations that are about listening rather than speaking can do a lot to help your workers feel the love and give their best.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4605f7f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4605f7f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-large\">Communication Strengthens Trust<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-63cab44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"63cab44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust has to be based on authenticity. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adenleadership.com\/what-is-courageous-authenticity-and-how-to-display-it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takes courage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013putting your ego to one side, holding your hands up, and saying sorry is not the response of a weak person. However, doing so when appropriate is only going to strengthen the trust your team members have in you as a leader.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicating as much as you can about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iveybusinessjournal.com\/publication\/how-leaders-can-communicate-to-build-trust\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">big picture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also helps employees trust their leaders. Sure, there will always be things that are confidential. But needlessly withholding information your workers could benefit from is counterproductive and could make you seem untrustworthy. Instead, communicate, communicate, communicate!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3da866b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3da866b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-large\">Communication Builds Consensus<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c159d99 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c159d99\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teams that communicate well are much more likely to build consensus and work together unitedly. To facilitate this, communication must be:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honest, yet kind<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focused on common interests and goals<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Include active listening from all involved<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a leader, your role is to keep the team focused and model productive communication. The team will sense when you\u2019re authentically engaged.
