“Fathering is not something perfect men do, but something that perfects the man.” – Frank Pittman
As Father’s Day approaches I reflect on the journey that started almost 9 years ago when Jackson (now 10) entered my world from an orphanage in St. Petersburg, Russia. Brooks (now 8) followed seven months later and my world would be changed forever.
I speak of servant leadership daily and the adventure of being a “Dad or parent” provides insight for me in all my roles to those I serve. Fatherhood provides an important perspective in leadership and how we conduct ourselves and show up for others. I became aware of my clarity and purpose from finally understanding what a true commitment to another human being was all about. My true intentions were revealed and I enjoyed many pieces of “humble pie”.
It takes courage and determination to shift everything in your life to be the person you know you need to be but more importantly want to be. We cannot hide our authentic selves as our children know when we are present with them or just appeasing the situation at hand because our thoughts are elsewhere.
Lessons I have learned to live by:
- Be authentic
- Be present
- Be the same person at home, work and play
- Be a listener
- Be patient
- Be an inspiration to those you serve
In closing, I want to encourage each and every one of us to appreciate our children, families, colleagues and friends this Sunday. Reflect on how you occur to those you love and care about.
As for me, how I want to be remembered by my sons. “Dad inspired us” are the words I hope they speak at some point during their lives.
I encourage all of us to be an inspiration in someone’s life every day. We all can make a difference in so many if we show up authentic and true to our clear purpose.
In service,
Greg

Beautifully said, Greg! Parenthood is the most honorable purpose in life; it’s selfless, it’s unconditional love; it’s a commitment; it’s inspirational; it’s hope; it’s painful at times; it’s endurance; it’s life itself… and, as you eloquently said it, Greg, it’s the essence of Leadership and the cornerstone of what true Service-Leadership all about.
Happy Father’s Day!
