This week we mourn the loss of an amazing athlete.  A sudden, unexpected and tragic for the loss of all on board the Kobe1 for families, friends and colleagues.  Even if you were not a basketball fan, you were aware of Kobe Bryant.

On Leadership – Kobe’s thoughts

“There’s a big misconception where people thinking winning or success comes from everybody putting their arms around each other and singing ‘Kumbaya’ and patting them on the back when they mess up, and that’s just not reality. If you are going to be a leader, you are not going to please everybody. You have to hold people accountable, even if you have that moment of being uncomfortable.” — Kobe: The Interview on NBA TV, February 2015

In reading the words above it captures the journey of what leadership meant to him.  He brings up some valuable insights.  One a lot of people who hire commonalities and / or known interests… as leaders we are not to be everybody’s friend.  It is not easy to conduct courageous conversations with those we serve and hold everyone accountable.  Remember, leadership is not easy.  By nature it is going to provide challenges that is why you have to do the work.  Another thing Kobe reminded all those who wanted to be great.  “You must do the work.  Nothing will get you to the top but you have a fighting chance if you do the work.”  Leaders, get used to being in the uncomfortable zone and doing the work.  This is what you chose to do.

I have discussed the legacy we leave behind. I encourage each of you to be aware of your legacy that you are leaving behind.  You are creating it each day.  And with anything you love and what the best for, there will be times where you will feel uncomfortable.  Be confident you are on the right path to guiding your team to success.

In addition to hundreds of memories, friends and fans, Kobe also left a legacy of leadership.  When our time comes, we too will leave memories, friends and fans behind.  That is a fact.  Enjoy creating your legacy and have a huge hand as to what people will say about what you left behind.  Enjoy the journey and don’t be afraid.

Sharing thoughts of leadership….

Greg
