Listening to Learn

“When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”

Learning is a lifetime opportunity.  There are lessons for all of us in our everyday encounters.  If we approach our day being vulnerable, not worrying so much about our title or position in communicating with others, we will experience life in a whole new and brighter way!

As a Leader we must be open to learn from the people we encounter.

Seek first to understand before being understood.”  Steven Covey

My question to you.. “Are you listening?”  Really listening and paying attention and without prejudging.  When we listen with an open heart we then open doors to experience valuable life lessons.  And please listen with your eyes too!

What’s in our heart is what truly matters.  It is not what is in our bank account, nor our title or what we own.  None of this will end up on our tombstone.  However, how we serve and lead one another has a great shot of making it on our great slab of marble.  If nothing else, we will have fun and learn a lot.  This one question “Are you listening?” will guide us to how to be an effective leader.

Showing appreciation of others and mentoring those we lead to overcome challenges they face will allow both of you to experience true growth.

Yes, we may learn something from everyone we encounter, from the person you share a room or house with, to a complete stranger we meet on the street.

The people that you lead hold the answers.  Just listen. Sounds simple, yet it is often a missed opportunity as we work our way through the day vs being engaged and learning.

Trust me, you do not want to hold yourself back by trying to know everything and closing your heart to new, fun information.

If you live in the realm of ‘I know it all’, there is nothing I can learn, I already have all the answers….you then risk becoming a one-dimensional leader, limited, missing possible opportunities that may appear right in front of you.

As a Leader we must be open to learn from the people we encounter.  And remember courage and vulnerability are two key qualities and attributes of being a great leader.  Nothing to be scared about!

“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” ~ John Wayne

I encourage you to saddle up, listen and learn.  Bring you…all of you, the real you.  See what happens.

In service,

Greg
