Being Present is a Service to Others

In coaching, we often reference the phrase “slowing down to speed up”. This phrase reminds us that there is great productive power in slowing down. This can be a challenge in a culture of “busy work”, where being busy is equated with being productive. Yet, we find that when we slow down enough to give others and ourselves the gift of being present, we are actually improving the quality of our interactions and in the end accomplishing more, not to mention improving the quality of our life. Just to pause and listen, to truly hear what the other is saying and be in the moment. Simply BEing and BEing you is enough.

Being Present Is A Service To Others

We all have the same amount of time, however different our missions in life by the day, week, month and year are. A goal for me within each of these life missions is to be present, aware and awake. In key relationships, we often find ourselves wishing we had more time to care for, serve and love another. But how many moments do we have with others important to us when we are not truly present, perhaps taking our time together for granted? We do not always need more time. Using the time we do have wisely and adding quality by being present can bring us in touch with the sense that there is enough time.

As you enter one scene of your life from another, take a moment to transition and take in the details around you. The next time you find yourself drifting into past or future thinking or looking past others in your interactions, take a deep breath, reengage with your surroundings and focus on the person in front of you. You will serve them at a much higher level when being totally present, authentic and aware of the moment and in return, receive more deeply.

Slowing down and being present may be one of the most important things you do today and everyday!
